Astronaut Discloses Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of Deluge of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also featured well-known figures.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the days following the landing.

She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her lab work and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her roots – was overshadowed under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following reaching space, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the followers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she wrote.

She added that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the mission, such as increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the edge of outer space.

The diverse crew also featured experts in different industries.

The venture behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
