The Journey of a Movement is often marked by specific steps.

1. The Grand Vision

An inspiring figure or coaches introduce an innovative concept that promises a solution for struggling players.

And so it goes. Preparations are underway to confront the system overseas. Pressure is mounting. Smoke is rising from the out-houses. A lone figure, vulnerable, shivering, the words HIGH RELEASE POINT displayed prominently in chicken blood, has emerged through the lines and is being led away with discretion towards an inconclusive loan stint elsewhere.

Do you recall the start, when optimism reigned? The days of Bazball 1.0, of uninhibited aggression.

2. Love-Bombing

Team architects offer a reboot, hope for a future, support, redemption among a group who all believe in the big idea.

What did it represent initially? Just men on a balcony basking in glory. Body art. Forearms. Determination. Peak performance vibes. Admittedly, The squad insist they don’t use the label, amusingly because if it doesn’t exist, what exactly did I just watch?

Yet it’s clear what it is. It’s Harry Brook executing a stroke so unconventional it defies description. It’s the thrill of the captain in his final form, a demeanor suggesting: focused titan, strong features, hair woven from beaver hide, genuinely raw you half-expect to look down and see him playing at mid-off shirtless and cradling a wild salmon.

It’s Ben Duckett still being allowed to talk in press conferences, out there looking like a happy little woodland creature smartly dressed, uttering phrases such as we’re challenging norms. Indeed, the vibe, initially, was only good energy.

3. Expansion Period

Growth phase. Cohesion maintained by rote learning of the cult’s slogans. These ideas are often illogical as a test of “true belief”.

Does anyone else feel? The reaction, the outrage, the sense of betrayal after the first Ashes Test defeat seems too strong, overdone. England batted badly during the match, as is typical there. Live where your feet are. Embrace challenges. Despite efforts, you’re always basically in the same place.
