Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of approach shafts leading to the site... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," he added. "They were among thousands of British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
