The Former President's Progressive Alarm Overlooks Europe's True Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an existential threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this period, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech leadership is decidedly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does Europe positioned? Experts widely concede it is largely a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a true unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a product under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, one can find causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose substantial change. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of major reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses considerable advantages: high-quality human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier labs. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
